A Levels

A levels

The A-level (short for Advanced Level), is a qualification taken by students, usually after completing their GCSEs. The qualification consists of two parts, the AS and A2.

1. The Advanced Subsidiary (AS)

This is a stand-alone qualification valued as 50% of a full A level qualification. The course comprises of 3 units, and is assessed by exams and course work.

2. The A2

This is the second half of a full A level qualification, covering more demanding material than the AS level. For example, in the A2, students might:

  • improve their skills
  • extend their knowledge and understanding by studying new topics
  • specialise in a particular area

Students may only progress onto the A2 level once they have passed the AS exams and course work. The overall A Level grade is based on the results from both stages.

In general, students in sixth form or further education colleges take up to 5 AS levels, which gives them the opportunity to try a range of new subjects or gain advanced skills in an existing one. After the have completed the AS level, they then go on to specialise in three or four of them to gain the full A level qualification.

In addition to the standard A level, there is also the Applied A level, designed to develop students' knowledge, skills and understanding in broad vocational areas. They include subjects such as Science, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Art and Design, Leisure and Tourism, IT and Business Studies, and are an excellent preparation for further study or training.
