Many children find the first initial weeks of schools stressful, and as a result you may notice that they behave differently than normal. They may be tired and need more time to relax, or they become difficult or defiant, in response to the stress of a new routine. Some children may become more withdrawn than usual.

You can support your child through this difficult first phase; here are a few suggestions how you can help:

  • Establish a regular routine at home to keep stress to a minimum. Make sure your child is informed of any changes to this routine well in advance.
  • Set aside time with your child each day to talk about school, listening carefully to any worries they might have.
  • Take an interest in what they have been doing and show them that you value their progress.
  • Encourage them to take pride in their work.
  • Find out as much as possible about your child's school and what happens there on a day-to-day basis.
  • Encourage your child to build friendships with other children in their class.

Most changes in behaviour will be resolved as your child adapts to this new way of life. However, if you have any worries about your child, or about any problems they may be experiencing at school, discuss your concerns with your child's teacher.
