Distance Learning If you are unable to attend a college or university on a regular basis, then a distance learning programme could be a good option for you. A distance learning course is specifically designed to be studied without you having to go onto campus; all your materials will be sent to you. Many programmes will even be assessed without you going in for an exam - although this may be a requirement for some courses. More and more people are choosing distance learning because of the flexibility and the vast range of quality courses and qualifications on offer. However, if you want to study this way, you will need to be self-motivated and self-disciplined - just because you'll be studying from home doesn't mean that the work will be easy. You usually find there is usually a great deal of support available - on some courses, learners can have unlimited access to tutors by telephone, fax, or email, whilst on others, contact may be by post, or through the marking of assignments. Online distance learning courses may have interactive features instead of tutor support. Why Enrol in a Distance Learning Course?
∗ Family commitments make regular attendance at a college difficult. ∗ The subject you want to study is not available locally. ∗ You want to acquire new skills, but can't afford time off work. ∗ Mobility or health issues make it difficult for you to get to a college regularly. ∗ You simply prefer to study in your own environment at times that suit you. Distance learning courses are available at many levels, including degree and postgraduate qualifications. For example: - Courses for general education or personal interest
- Basic skills, such as study skills and essay writing
- Academic qualifications, including GCSEs, AS and A levels
- Vocational courses
- Degree and Higher National Diploma courses
- Professional qualifications, for example Association of Accounting Technicians;
- Post-graduate qualifications and advanced degree courses, such as the Masters in Business Administration (MBA)
Distance learning is not restricted to the UK; it's also possible to study with educational institutions that are based in other countries. However, before applying for any online course, it's important to make sure that the institution is recognised by the relevant UK authorities. |
