The Special Support Grant is available for new full-time higher education students from lower income households starting a course from September 2006. This non-repayable grant is for students who are eligible to receive Income Support and other means-tested benefits such as Housing Benefit, which may include lone parents, student couples with children and some disabled students.

Special Support Grants

The Special Support Grant is available for new full-time higher education students from lower income households starting a course from September 2006. This non-repayable grant is for students who are eligible to receive Income Support and other means-tested benefits such as Housing Benefit, which may include lone parents, student couples with children and some disabled students.

The grant is intended to enable eligible students to cover additional course costs such as books, equipment, childcare or travel. They can receive up to £2,700 a year, depending on their income and the income of their household:

Unlike the Maintenance Grant , the Special Support Grant has no effect on the amount of Student Loan for Maintenance that can be borrowed.

Special Support Grants are paid directly in the student's bank account in three instalments - one at the start of each term. However, students who receive the Special Support Grant cannot also receive the Maintenance Grant.
