UCAS Extra

If you're applying for a full-time place through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and you don't get any offers from the universities or colleges on your list, or you turn down or cancel your choices, you may have a second chance to secure a place through UCAS Extra. The service starts mid-March and runs until early July.

You are eligible for Extra if:

  • you have used all six of your choices; and
  • you have had unsuccessful or withdrawal decisions for all your choices; or
  • you have cancelled your outstanding choices and hold no offers; or
  • you have received replies back from all six choices and have declined all offers made to you.

Applying through Extra

As soon as you become eligible for Extra, UCAS will write to inform you, and a special 'Extra' button will appear on your online application form (the 'Track' screen). You will then need to search the UCAS site for courses available through Extra. Once you have found a course you want to apply for, simply enter its details on your Track screen, and your Extra application will be sent automatically to the relevant university or college.

You can only apply for one course at a time; however, every 15 days, the UCAS Track system will allow you to refer your application elsewhere. You should always check with the institution considering your original Extra application before referring yourself to another university or college.

Offers <//a>

If you receive an offer through Extra, you must consider whether or not to accept it. If you already have your examination results, you may receive an unconditional offer. If you accept the offer, then you are fully committed to attending that course.

If you are currently studying for examinations, any offer that you receive will probably be conditional, that is, you will be required to achieve a certain number of points or obtain particular grades. If you decide to accept a conditional offer, you will be committed to that course and you will not be able to take any further part in Extra. However, if you do not require the results specified in the conditions of the offer and the institution is not willing to confirm your place, then you will automatically become eligible for Clearing.

If the institution turns you down, or you decline an offer, your 'Extra' button will be re-activated and you will be permitted to make a further application.

If you don't manage to secure a place through Extra, you will still have the opportunity to go through the Clearing system .
