University & College Checklist Before applying for a higher education course , there are a number of things you need to consider; we've put together a handy checklist to help you assess each institution you're interested so that you can compare it to others. The Course- What will you be studying - is the course outline or syllabus readily available?
- How will you be taught? Lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical work?
- How many students are there in an average class?
- What is the percentage of mature students on the course?
- How will you be assessed? By exam, continual assessment? A mixture of both?
Performance - What is the quality of teaching and research at the institution?
- How does your chosen course rate?
- What percentage of students complete their studies?
- What's the pass rate for examinations?
- Is the degree classification method made clear to students?
Qualifications - What do people do with this qualification?
- How many students progress to further study or related employment?
Finance - How much are the fees?
- How much is accommodation (both university and private sector)?
- How much is the cost of living in that part of the country?
- What bursaries are available from the institution?
Support - Is there a regular system of tutorials?
- Does the institution provide a Student Services department offering counselling, financial advice or careers guidance?
- Is there specific support available for any disability, learning difficulties or health issue that you may have?
- Does the institution welcome adult learners?
- Are there additional services for adults returning to learning, such as study skills courses?
- Is there additional language or learning support available?
The Facilities - If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, are the buildings accessible?
- Is there a library and IT facilities? Are they open at reasonable times?
- Are there facilities on campus that you find important, such as a medical practice, banks, pharmacies, bars, eating areas, newsagents, bookshops or cafes?
- Are there facilities for extra-curricular activities such as sport?
- Is there a student coffee bar or common room in the department?
- Are there childcare facilities available? Is it a nursery or crèche? What's the criteria and cost for using them?
- Are the buildings well maintained or in need of repair?
The Atmosphere - Does the college offer a welcoming and friendly environment?
- Does it have a good 'feel' about it?
- Could you see yourself living there for the next three (or more) years?
